Overview of Taylor's Hill Bungalow
Deep in the heart of the picturesque Hewaheta Valley in the central hills, off the historic city of Kandy is one of Sri Lanka's very first tea plantations. Here, surrounded by cloudy peaks sits an old English manor – once home to a British Planter Mr. Dominic Elwes, who built it over a century ago. Now revived as a nostalgic haven, Taylor's Hill is a luxurious retreat to all who wish to revisit the comforts of a colonial past.
A gentle breeze, cool and crisp rustles the leaves of an ancient ‘Bo' Tree. The sprawling baobab – spreading its branches wide, stands impressive; as it has done for centuries. The piercing whistle of a Ceylon Grackle - an endemic bird of the hills, cuts through the air. On cue, the heavy mist floats by to reveal the wooded outcrops behind the bungalow and the distant ranges bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun. The stage is set for another beautiful evening at Mandira Taylor's Hill – and warmth beckons you from indoors.
Accommodation at Taylor's Hill Bungalow
The Bungalow
Let time return to the 1900s. A wide wooden staircase curves upwards from the hallway. Chandeliers glow in unison along the length of the long corridor. Luxurious sofas embrace the vast drawing room where the grand old fireplace still sits in proud. Heavy drapes keep the cool nights, firmly outdoors. The adjacent Billiards room is home to the truly magnificent 150 year old table, still in pristine condition and ready for a round of play. A haven of comfort awaits upstairs. Five plush bedrooms carefully redesigned to take you right back to a colonial past, yet with all the requisites of this century to indulge in. Two, include separate living rooms offering wonderful vistas of the distant mountains. The magnificent master suite with its own fireplace, also boasts another extravagance – a bath with a view. Intricate antique furniture – authentic pieces handed down from generations add a sense of grandeur. With beauty and breathtaking charm meeting you from every corner, the lush comforts of a time past, is yours to enjoy once again.
The Garden
Swathed in cool mist, range upon range of mountains fade into the distance. From the vantage point of the sprawling green lawn you can watch their splendour. Towering trees flank the bungalow on both sides. Tall pines reaching heavenwards, rub shoulders with age old giants with twisted wide girths revealing their age. An ancient mango tree – hundreds of years old, stands guard at the forecourt. Brightly coloured lilies nod approval as you pause to listen to the lilting birdsongs, floating in with the gentle breeze. A few steps below the lawn yet hidden in a world of its own is the vast infinity pool. With breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks from all around, you might be tempted to laze in its cool waters all day long. Down from the winding pathway, the lush green of tea takes over. From every nook of the acres of gardens, tranquillity reigns and is yours to enjoy – whether you just sit in calm repose, or enjoy a meal out on the green.
Dining at Taylor's Hill Bungalow
In the colonial days the plantation residences were famed for their cooks. The ‘Appu' as they were called, were modest, but wonderful chefs who were able turn out exceptional dishes whether one requested a roast or a red curry. This tradition is heartily continued to this day and here, you can feast on fare of your choice – from the East or West from the menu, or you can ask for your favourites to be prepared anytime too; just give us a little advance notice to find the freshest ingredients of course.
And then, you have the difficult decision to make as to where you want to enjoy your meals. The stone floored breakfast room certainly lives up to its name. Bathed in early light, it's the perfect corner to start the first meal of the day. Or, there's the cosy morning room with wide windows and wonderful views. Lunch could be al fresco by the poolside; high tea on the lawn like the days of old and the beautifully lavish dining room for a grand meal complete with all the trimmings. Whichever choice you make the delightful dishes are always served with heartfelt smiles.

Excursions at Taylor's Hill Bungalow If you care to stray away from the ‘manor', myriad attractions await you in the central hills of Sri Lanka. The area surrounding Taylor's Hill is of historic significance – the neighbouring estate of Loolcondera is where the story of tea in Ceylon actually began. And where better to start a special tea experience tour – to follow the legacy, visit the plantations; the factories and learn about the whole process too.
For an unforgettable lesson in culture, take a trip to the ancient hill capital of Kandy. Today, the vibrant hub of the central province it was the last ruling kingdom of Ceylon. Heritage is preserved in the wonderful architecture of the temples and shrines around the city and its outskirts. This is home to the sacred Temple of the Tooth – the ‘Dalada Maligawa' to which, devout Buddhists visit on pilgrimage from around the world. The exquisite carvings and traditional imagery at the nearby temples of Embekke, Gadaladeniya and Lankathileke are also within easy travelling distance. For nature lovers, the famous Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, is a must. Here thousands of species of flora – both common and rare flourish. For a wilder experience, head to the pristine forest preservation of ‘Udawattekelle' – possibly the only jungle reserve in the heart of a bustling city! But enter this lush green wonder and you could be a million miles away in a land undiscovered by man.
For the ardent golfer the scenic green of the world class Victoria Golf Course – named one of the most beautiful courses in the world is within easy distance to head to for a satisfying round.
Activities at Taylor's Hill Bungalow Prefer to stay close by? There is plenty to keep you busy within close proximity to the bungalow too. The undulating hills of the surrounding Pattiyagama Estate is lush with tea and offers you plenty of hiking trails. A winding pathway leads down to a quiet reservoir surrounded by misty hills - the perfect spot to visit for a time of peaceful reflection or a delightful picnic.
If you crave some energetic action, why not take walk down to the reservoir and enjoy the tranquil scenery by its shores or explore the estate surrounding it. You can also take bike for an exhilarating ride on some of the mountain trails on the estate or even further out to the forested outcrops. For some real excitement, go on a nature trek to the nearby ‘Kondagala range'. One of the unique rainforest reserves in the mountains, its dense jungle is home to many rare species of flora and fauna including leopards – who knows, it might be your day to spot one.
If seek your pursuits indoors, then a game of billiards on the antique table in the old games room is a must. A 150 year old treasure with all its original accessories it is truly a wonderful way to re-live an authentic colonial tradition. However, if excitement on the ‘box' is what you crave, the cosy TV room has a large LED TV and cable channels to keep you abreast with all the latest on-screen action.
Surroundings at Taylor's Hill Bungalow Rolling hills from every angle – above you and around you, slope gently covered in fresh green tea, or rise sharply in forest clad outcrops reaching out to the sky. Clouds float by with the whispering winds, sometimes engulfing the whole vista, then lifting away just as suddenly to bathe the scenery with glorious light. Serenity presides everywhere and beauty of diverse sorts, gentle or breathtaking is yours to take in from all sides. Hidden deep in a valley and sheltered by the vagaries of the elements, the bungalow is surrounded by lushness. The bungalow garden itself is a haven of beauty: landscaped lawns with neat flowering borders, little corners of wilderness where ancient trees stand in clumps as they have done for all time; old stone steps lead down to the infinity pool with magnificent views of the distant mountains – surely a place to spend days of leisure. With a myriad greens from the hills to the valleys, the tranquil beauty that surrounds Taylor's hill will keep you entranced.
