Wildlife in Sri Lanka - Adventure at it's best

Sri Lanka has an abundance of exotic and varied natural riches and a long tradition of conservation rooted in its ancient Buddhist traditions which teach kindness and compassion to all living creatures.

The island can claim the world's first wildlife sanctuary dating from the 3rd century B.C. Ancient rulers were also aware of the ' importance of forest conservation for ecological needs and large wilderness tracts were set aside as reserves for rain catchment and pest control purposes.'

Yala game sanctuary
One of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka . The second largest. This park is popular for the different types of animals it inherits. Tuskers and leopards are generally found in Yala. Established in 25/02/1938 with a land extent of 103,883 hectares.

In 1970 Yala east of 18,142 hectares was attached and the area was increased to 122,024 hectares. This park is situated at the Southern part of Sri Lanka . Yala National Park is situated approximately 309 Km from Colombo .

     

Udawalawe game sanctuary
Udawalawe national park was established in 1972 with an area of 30,800 hectares. This park is a home for herds of elephants. There are approximately between 300-400 elephants living in the park.

Besides elephants you could also come across deer, samber, hornbills, peafowl and various other mammals and birds.

     

Wasgamuwa game sanctuary
This park is situated 220 Km from Colombo in between Matale and Pollonnaruwa districts. The park was established on 09/11/1984 and has a land area of 36,948 hectares.

Besides having different types of mammals, elephant is the most popular animal and it is considered a bit dangerous, too. This park has a history from the 12th Century.


     

Bundala game sanctuary
Bundala National Park with an area of 6216 hectares is located in the Southern part of Sri Lanka . Better known as Ramsar Wetland. It is very popular for migratory birds. The area is covered with unique lagoons and thorny scrub jungle where elephants roam.

It is also a home for 149 species of migratory birds. These migratory birds come from the Himalaya region. Bundala National Park is situated approximately 260 Km from Colombo .
